– The white surface design greatly improves visibility of the cervix through light reflection. Clear loses the light.
– Reduced risk of misdiagnosis. Examining through a “clear” speculum may provide a limited or distorted view due to local tissue depression or discoloration.
– Patients perceive white as higher quality, more hygienic, and friendlier.
A clear choice
Orchid Spec’s clear vaginal speculum provides a visible advantage in cases where the goal is to access larger areas, control bleeding, or inspect sutures. Our white speculum is used by 95% of our customers, though some also keep the clear version on hand for specific situations.

The Idea
Birth of Orchid Spec
In 2007, Mr. Bob Roeloffs, while involved in a gynecology project, realized that the proposed design had several shortcomings. These could result in sharp edges along the outer circumference of the product, which he believed would cause discomfort and potential harm to the patient.
At that moment, Bob was inspired to create a revolutionary design to solve this problem. While addressing it, he also identified several other aspects that could be improved. The Orchid Spec design was born.
The name ‘Orchid Spec’ comes from the delicate beauty of the Orchid flower. (lat. Orchidaceae)
Design
Meet the designer
Designer Bob Roeloffs reimagined the speculum with a passion for detail, comfort, ease of use, and exceptional quality. He believed it was time to move beyond traditional designs and created a new speculum — the Orchid Spec — optimized with gynecologists, patients, hospitals, and an environmentally responsible product lifecycle in mind.
Mr. Roeloffs holds a master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.
